Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a common prenatal test in which a small sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus is removed and examined. It is usually performed in the second trimester (between 15-18 weeks) to diagnose or rule out certain types of birth defects. Amniocentesis may be offered because of:

  • Maternal age (if a woman will be 35 or older at time of delivery)
  • Previous child with a birth defect
  • Abnormal screening results
  • Other family history

Antepartum Testing/Fetal Heart Monitoring Test

Our antepartum testing area is staffed by certified and highly skilled nurses who specialize in the care of women experiencing high risk pregnancy. Our focus is providing care to women who experience complications that may put an otherwise healthy pregnancy at risk. A nonstress test is a safe, painless way to check on a baby's well-being. Two small monitors are placed on the abdomen and held in place using elastic belts. One of these monitors records the contractions and the other records the baby's heart rate. The test normally takes about 20-40 minutes and is done in the comfort of our private rooms. Some reasons to have a nonstress performed may include:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Changes in baby's growth rate
  • Changes in baby's movement
  • Past the baby's due date
